In Memory of Reverend Beth Gray
By John Harvey Gray
My wife, Lourdes, and I have always held the greatest admiration and love for Reverend Beth Gray, and are deeply saddened by her passing on May 13, 2008. Beth and I first met in San Francisco, just one week after Pearl Harbor. We were married while I was on leave from duty in the Philippines, near the end of WWII. We settled in Menlo Park, California. Beth had a deep desire to become a spiritual minister, studied many years to accomplish this, and then opened a church, Trinity Metaphysical Center, in Redwood City, California. It met every Sunday evening, and as a part of the services, people who were later to become leaders in the fields of metaphysics and spirituality were invited to deliver the main addresses. Through their lectures at the church, writers such as James Redfield (The Celestine Prophecy), Helen Wambach(Life Before Life), and Jeffrey Mishlove (The Roots of Consciousness), first introduced themselves to the world community.
One of the speakers was Hawayo Takata, who spoke on Reiki. Beth asked Takata whether she would present Reiki classes at our house. Takata agreed and taught at least 15 classes in our home. In 1975, Takata suffered a heart attack. In 1976, she asked Beth and me whether we would like to teach Reiki. We both said “yes,” and I, in 1976, and Beth, in 1978, became Reiki Master Teachers. Both of us were taught and initiated by Hawayo Takata.
In 1979, our life’s choices and teachings led us in different directions … I, to New England, and Beth, to Australia. Beth was the first teacher to introduce Reiki to Australia and New Zealand. She held many classes there and was revered by her students for the depth and clarity of her teachings. After her stroke in 1992, former students and friends would travel from all over the world to be in her presence. Beth Gray was a deeply spiritual person, a gifted healer, and a psychic. As an old soul, her presence would illuminate the room and fill the hearts of those around her. We believe that Beth has been called into the Spirit World at this time of crisis, to return and play an even greater role in the healing of the Earth and all of its people. Although we have been separated by distance and time, we have always remained the closest of friends.

Reverend Beth Gray's Advice To a New Reiki Master
By Dr. Lourdes Gray
I first met Reverend Beth Gray in 1997, about a year after I married John. We had traveled from our home in New Hampshire to visit his family in the San Francisco Bay Area. Beth and John were married near the end of WWII, had raised a family together, and then parted in 1979, after life circumstances and decisions guided them in very different directions. Through the years, they always remained very dear friends and cared deeply for one another.
Although I was eager to meet my husband’s family for the first time, I felt some apprehension about meeting Beth. What would she think of me? John and I arrived at Beth’s home in Woodside, California. He led the way into Beth’s kitchen. Beth was sitting in her chair, waiting for us with a beautiful smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. Beth and I first held hands and then hugged each other. I had never before been made to feel so welcome. From that moment on, I was totally in love with Reverend Beth Gray.
Many people have remarked how Beth’s radiance had warmed their hearts. Having experienced this many times for myself, I knew it to be true. But she did much more than illuminate a room. Through her ministry, Beth brought hope, inspiration and Reiki to thousands of people around the world. Through her kindness and amazing wisdom she healed the sick and comforted those who were suffering.
Reverend Beth Gray was blessed with special spiritual gifts. Her teachings will always live in the hearts and minds of those who learned from her. Beth will forever be remembered with honor and love by family, friends, students, and her students’ students. Reverend Beth Gray was one of the most advanced spiritual teachers of our time. My husband, John, and I believe that she has been called into Spirit at this time so that she can return as a spiritual master, to bring much-needed healing to our planet.
Soon after I became a Reiki Master Teacher, I asked Beth what advice she would have for me as I embarked on this new journey. Beth looked at me intently, smiled and said, “Keep it simple, keep the system simple.” … I will. Thank you, Beth. I promise.
Treating Emergency Situations with Reiki
By Dr. Lourdes Gray
As Reiki practitioners we are not allowed to diagnose or prescribe. When reading this article, please keep in mind that it is presented for informational purposes only. We always recommend a licensed medical practitioner be consulted for any type of medical situation — chronic or acute.
In cases of medical emergencies, Reiki may not be the best first response. Consult the American Red Cross for more information on what to do in cases of life-threatening injuries. Always address life-threatening situations first. Reiki can be given later, once the emergency is over. It will help accelerate the healing process. Reiki can be used as an adjunct to allopathic treatments. Reiki has no contraindications. It works with the wisdom of the body. You can always give Reiki with confidence; you know that it cannot do any harm.
Perhaps the best evidence we have for the effectiveness of Reiki is found by examining the results of emergency Reiki treatments. Whereas improvement may not be apparent for weeks or longer when treating long-standing chronic conditions, when treating injuries that just happened, the effects of Reiki can be visible after one or two sessions. Give Reiki to the injury as soon as possible. We have seen small cuts close to become just a scratch, burns disappear; swelling, inflammation and pain diminished, and little or no formation of scar tissue. The results can be remarkable!
Several years ago, Jim Oschman, the author of the best seller, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, gave a workshop at our Center. At dinner that night, Jim, John and I talked about how Reiki energy enhances the body’s ability to repair injuries. In giving us his explanation of how healing energy interacts with living cells, Jim remarked, “after an injury, there is about a five- to ten-minute window before the cells start to disorganize.” The cells of the body will tend to ‘remember’ how they were before the accident. With the support of a strong flow of healing Reiki energy, the cells affected by the injury will try to revert to their original healthy form and condition.
Although the effects of using Reiki are accentuated when given within the 5-10 minute window, the healing process is still accelerated by a significant factor whenever Reiki is given within a short time after the injury.
Treating emergency situations differs from treating a chronic condition in that treating an emergency situation is a two step process: 1) Treat the injury; 2) Release the memory of the injury from the body by treating the adrenal glands.
1. Treat the injury.
Use common sense. Seek appropriate medical assistance when necessary. Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment. Remember, as Reiki Practitioners, we are not allowed to diagnose or prescribe. Always ask and receive permission to treat from the person who is injured before starting the Reiki treatment. If the person is unresponsive and you do not know him or her, do not do Reiki without the consent of someone who is authorized to give consent on that person's behalf (such as a parent with a child). But if you know the injured and unresponsive person well, and you know that he or she would want to receive a Reiki treatment even if unconscious, then you may proceed with the treatment and assume implied consent based on your relationshp with and prior knowledge of that person.
Apply Reiki directly or just above the injured area after or during first-aid treatment, or while waiting for emergency personnel, and especially after medical treatment is given. Remember that in an emergency, as in all cases, you can treat yourself as well as others.
Stay with the Reiki treatment until the flow of energy subsides. The time needed will depend entirely upon the person and the severity of the injury. The only rule is to treat the affected site for as long as it is necessary. If the injury is a broken bone or similar trauma, common sense says that Reiki is not going to repair the broken bone in some magical way. The bone will need to be set by a medical doctor. However, application of Reiki in the area above and over the affected site can help reduce or eliminate the swelling and pain around the break. When the person does have the broken bone set, the doctor will be able to slide the bones together more easily, rather than having to push the swollen tissue aside, which can be difficult and painful.
Keep in mind that you do not need to touch the wound and risk possible infection from your hands. You can treat by holding your hands three or five inches above the injured area.
Be sure to release the adrenal glands whether you are able to give a full Reiki treatment or not. As described earlier, this is a key factor. If an accident has occurred and the person has an injured back, you should not move them. Wait until trained emergency personnel respond.
2. Release the memory of the injury from the body by treating the adrenal glands.
After treating any trauma or emergency with Reiki, finish the treatment by releasing the shock of the accident and memory of the injury by treating the adrenal glands. This is important. When we are stressed, such as at the time of an accident or surgery, the body enters into a survival mode. During an emergency, the adrenal glands begin to secrete adrenaline into the bloodstream to protect the body and provide it with the extra energy needed to respond.
In addition, if the person is experiencing a negative emotion at the time of the injury, the shock and the impact of the injury can actually lock the memory of the negative emotion into the body. This locked-in memory makes it more difficult for the injury to heal completely. Giving Reiki to the adrenal glands after an injury can release both of these from the body.
Takata used to say that if an injury that should have healed, and has not, then the body is still holding onto the memory of the injury. So always remember to release the adrenal glands after an injury or surgery, returning the body to its normal state.
To release the adrenal glands, place your hands three to five inches above the body directly over the adrenal glands and administer Reiki until you feel the flow of energy diminish. The adrenals are located just above the kidneys in the lower back. If it is possible for the person to turn over onto his or her stomach, the correct hand placement is Pattern 3, Hand Positions 3 and 4. If it is not possible for the person to turn over, you can access the adrenals energetically through the body with the first two positions of Pattern 1. In either case, administer Reiki until you feel the flow of energy subside.
Surgery is an emergency to the body.
The body interprets the trauma of surgery as if it were an injury resulting from an accident. After surgery, treat that area in the same manner you would treat any emergency. Keep your hands above the body, hovering over the incision — do not touch the body or place any pressure over the area. Then release the adrenal glands in the same manner as described above.

Our new CD Emotionality in the Chakras & Balancing Meditationis available now! John's groundbreaking theory and balancing meditation were developed based on his many years of experience teaching and practicing Reiki.
Extending on Wilhelm Reich's theory of body armoring, John demonstrates how emotional tension, held in the muscles, decreases the energy flow in the chakras and deprives them of essential life force. John then teaches you a very short but extremely powerful meditation to release this tension, balance your chakras and improve your overall energy level.
Understanding and developing the body's energy centers, i.e., the chakras, enables you to accelerate your spiritual advancement. Practicing the chakra balancing meditation brings a deep sense of peace and balance within the self. As you continue using the chakra balancing meditation, you will enjoy a greater sense of mental clarity, emotional balance and spiritual awareness.
