Reiki for the Elderly

Question: “Is Reiki done differently with the elderly?”

Answer: Yes and no.
The “yes” part: The Reiki treatment protocol is the same for people of all ages. Stay longer over the problem areas. Give more Reiki energy to those areas, but do not neglect the rest.

1.) For a chronic condition. Give complete Reiki treatments, and treat all of the positions in the three Reiki patterns any time you are dealing with a chronic condition. A chronic condition could be of a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual nature. There is no dichotomy in Reiki. Reiki treats the entire person, and supports nature’s natural healing process, at all levels, not just the physical.

2.) For an injury that just happened. First follow standard first aid procedures or visit a licensed medical practitioner (or hospital), whichever of the two is most appropriate under the circumstances. Then, treat the injury with Reiki. Treating an injury with Reiki is a two-step process. First, you would give Reiki to the injury; secondly, you would release the memory of the injury from the body by giving Reiki to the adrenal glands.

The “no” part: Many elderly clients have physical restrictions and are unable to lie prone (face down) very comfortably on a bodywork table. Some may not be able to lie down at all. In such cases you will need to adjust your hand positions in order for the client to be more comfortable. Try doing the Reiki treatment while the elderly person sits in a recliner chair. Reiki will pass through any material, including the back of the chair. If the person is in a wheelchair, he or she does not have to lean forward when you give Reiki to the back of the torso. If the client is able to lie supine (face up) but not prone (face down), have him or her turn on his or her side in order to Reiki the back. Prop some pillows around the body so that the person can lean against them and be more comfortable during the Reiki treatment.
